Sponsor a child

...
Pretty soon Good News Clubs will be kicking off again for the year. Official start dates vary but most start in September. Good News Club (GNC) is a Christian club that meets once a week in the school, this is a wonderful opportunity for us to be able to teach Bible stories & about God & Jesus in the school!
This year the John Muir/Woodridge & Rusch clubs would like to provide t-shirts for the kids that attend club. These are shirts the kids could wear that say "I am a member of Good News Club" and could help them to tell their friends about GNC. To do this we need your help! We are looking for people to sponsor a child from a Good News Club so they can receive a free t-shirt and 4 devotionals (60 days per devo) that will be distributed and used with the students thru-out the school year. The cost to sponsor a child would be $7. We are estimating we'll need enough for 125 between the 2 clubs.
Checks can be made out to Child Evangelism Fellowship (CEF) and you will receive a receipt for your donation. Watch for sponsor slips in the worship. You can turn them into Nikki Z or drop them in the welcome card box by the front door.
If you have any questions please contact Nikki Zajicek at 617-9772 or NikkiZ@portagechurch.org.
Please pray for the club leaders and for kids to attend the clubs. Last year Rusch averaged between 28-32 kids and this is the 1st year for John Muir/Woodridge.

Charismatic Position Statement

I have been getting some phone calls and emails asking me some questions about "speaking in tongues" and where River stands with charismatic gifts that occurred at Pentecost.

So to help some of you out, I am posting River's official position on charismatic theology along with some questions and answers for you as well. A little over a year ago I wrote a position statement and last year the members voted unanimously to adopt this as part of our official doctrinal statement.

Charismatic Theology

A position statement from the leadership of River of Life Church

THE HOLY SPIRIT
The Holy Spirit is the third, co-equal person in the Trinity. He is as much God as the Father and the Son. Every true believer is indwelled by the Holy Spirit at salvation, and has His ministry as Teacher, Leader, Comforter, Guide, Chastener, and Director in their lives.

The so-called “sign gifts” were a first century phenomena that served certain definite purposes and ceased when those purposes were served. By God’s grace, we are non-charismatic church who are born again, and fully filled with the Holy Spirit.

John 14:16-17; Acts 5:3-4; Rom 8:9-11; 1 Cor 2:10-12, 12:11; Heb 10:15-17; Jn. 7:39; Acts 2:38, 5:32; Gal. 4:6-7, 3:3

SIGN GIFTS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
We, at River of Life Church, teach and maintain that there is one baptism of the Holy Spirit that occurs at the time a person is born again, placing that one into the body of Christ. River also distinguishes between spiritual gifts distributed to believers to equip them for ministry and the "sign gifts" which are understood to have been manifestations of the Holy Spirit to authenticate the messenger and the gospel message during the foundational period of the church. Therefore, River holds that "sign gifts" are not normative for the church today. While this position is not and must not be a test of fellowship with those whose traditions differ, members of this church will not practice or propagate practices that diverge or have any discrepancy with our position on this issue. We put this forth to keep unity in the local body, River of Life Church.

Rom. 8:9; Acts 10:44, 11:16; Eph. 1:13-14; 1 Cor. 12:3, 13, 13:8-10; Mt. 16:4; Col. 2:9, 3:11; 2 Cor. 5:5

Along with our official position statement above, I am posting an answer to the question... Click here for the full post

Are Tongues for Today?

Cessationism is the view that the “miracle gifts” of tongues and healing have ceased—that the end of the apostolic age brought about a cessation of the miracles associated with that age. Most cessationists believe that, while God can and still does perform miracles today, the Holy Spirit no longer uses individuals to perform miraculous signs.

The biblical record shows that miracles occurred during particular periods for the specific purpose of authenticating a new message from God. Moses was enabled to perform miracles to authenticate his ministry before Pharaoh (Exodus 4:1-8); Elijah was given miracles to authenticate his ministry before Ahab (1 Kings 17:1; 18:24); the apostles were given miracles to authenticate their ministry before Israel (Acts 4:10, 16).

Jesus’ ministry was also marked by miracles, which the Apostle John calls “signs” (John 2:11). John’s point is that the miracles were proofs of the authenticity of Jesus’ message.

After Jesus’ resurrection, as the Church was being established and the New Testament was being written, the apostles demonstrated “signs” such as tongues and the power to heal. “Tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not” (1 Corinthians 14:22, a verse that plainly says the gift was never intended to edify the church).

The Apostle Paul predicted that the gift of tongues would cease (1 Corinthians 13:8).

Here are 6 proofs that it has already ceased:

1) The apostles, through whom tongues came, were unique in the history of the church. Once their ministry was accomplished, the need for authenticating signs ceased to exist.

2) The miracle (or sign) gifts are only mentioned in the earliest Epistles, such as 1 Corinthians. Later books, such as Ephesians and Romans, contain detailed passages on the gifts of the Spirit, but the miracle gifts are not mentioned (although Romans does mention the gift of prophecy, the Greek word translated prophecy mean “speaking forth” and does not necessarily include prediction of the future).

3) The gift of tongues was a sign to unbelieving Israel that God’s salvation was now available to other nations. See 1 Corinthians 14:21-22 and Isaiah 28:11-12.

4) Tongues was an inferior gift to prophecy (preaching). Preaching the Word of God edifies believers, whereas tongues does not. Believers are told to seek prophesying over speaking in tongues (1 Corinthians 14:1-3).

5) History indicates that tongues did cease. Tongues are not mentioned at all by the Post-Apostolic Fathers. Other writers such as Justin Martyr, Origen, Chrysostom, and Augustine considered tongues something that happened only in the earliest days of the Church.

6) Current observation confirms that the miracle of tongues has ceased. If the gift were still available today, there would be no need for missionaries to attend language school. Missionaries would be able to travel to any country and speak any language fluently, just as the apostles were able to speak in Acts 2.As for the miracle gift of healing, we see in Scripture that healing was associated with the ministry of Jesus and the apostles (Luke 9:1-2). And we see that as the era of the apostles drew to a close, healing, like tongues, became less frequent. The Apostle Paul, who raised Eutychus from the dead (Acts 20:9-12), did not heal Epaphroditus (Philippians 2:25-27), Trophimus (2 Timothy 4:20), Timothy (1 Timothy 5:23), or even himself (2 Corinthians 12:7-9). The reasons for Paul’s “failures to heal” are 1) the gift was never intended to make every Christian well, but to authenticate apostleship; and 2) the authority of the apostles had been sufficiently proved, making further miracles unnecessary.

The reasons stated above are evidence that the sign gifts have ceased. According to 1 Corinthians 13:13-14:1, we would do well to “pursue love,” the greatest gift of all. If we are to desire gifts, we should desire to speak forth the Word of God, that all may be edified.

Divine Savior Volunteers Needed...

We are looking for people to help the elderly and terminally ill at Divine Savior's Extended Care facility here in Portage.  There are many wonderful opportunities for you to give of your time in fellowship and compassion with the residents!

I am looking for people who are interested in "adopting" grand-friends to visit with, take walks with, have coffee with and just bring cheer to.  This opportunity requires a short volunteer orientation. There are opportunities to spend time with residents who don't have many visitors or the terminally ill who just want a hand to hold.

I am also in need of volunteers on Sunday, September 13th for the Alzheimer's Memory Walk in Portage.  The Divine Savior Extended Care will be bringing a walking team composed of residents and staff.  We are looking for volunteers to help push the wheelchairs of residents who wish to participate in the walk.  We need help getting them on the bus and walking with them on the levee.  Its a great opportunity to meet a new friend. :)

Also, our Recreation Rehab department is considering adding an adult Sunday school class on occasssional Friday mornings for residents that would include singing, scripture reading, and Christian fellowship!  We are looking for volunteers who would be able to give of their time in assisting in any way they could with this ministry.

Please contact Jamie Kinworthy if you are interested in any of the above opportunities!

You're Invited...

Dear River Family and Friends,

I want to extend an invitation to your church members to attend our upcoming CBA quarterly meeting to be held on Saturday, August 15, from 10:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. at Three Rivers Fellowship Church in Lacrosse. All the contact information for the church location is located below. We are pleased to share this meeting is historic because it is the first time this young church has hosted a CBA event.

At this meeting we have the privilege of having Keith and Mary Ruth Dixon with us from the Greater Cleveland County Baptist Association in North Carolina. For the past three years this association has brought mission teams to the Madison area to serve our churches and communities. They have partnered with us significantly in prayer, people and provisions. Keith and Mary Ruth will be leading two different workshops in the afternoon. The biblical teaching they are sharing with us have been of great benefit to the pastors and key leaders of their association. The workshops are "Listening to the Voice of God" and "Serving in the Power of God."

Lunch will be provided by Three Rivers Fellowship Church. If at all possible, please share with us in the office how many from your church plan to come. We encourage you to invite as many key leaders as you can.

For the business portion of our meeting, we will be discussing the 2010 budget and 2010 calendar. Thanks for your investment of time and energy to be part of the association.
